As Director of Gilded Balloon, Karen has been at the heart of one of the Fringe’s most influential and enduring venues. Over four decades, she has helped shape the careers of countless performers, comedians and theatre-makers, while championing new talent and providing a platform for work that might otherwise never have reached an audience.
2026 marks 40 years of Gilded Balloon, making this an especially fitting moment to recognise Karen’s remarkable journey. From its beginnings in 1986, Gilded Balloon has become synonymous with the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, and Karen’s leadership, determination and vision have been central to that legacy.
Her achievement is particularly significant because she has forged this path as a woman pioneer in a traditionally male-dominated sector. Rather than simply succeeding within the existing landscape, Karen has helped change that landscape — demonstrating that leadership, resilience, entrepreneurial spirit and a passion for live performance can create a lasting cultural institution.
The Fringe Theatre Awards therefore honour Karen Koren not only for her personal achievements, but for the opportunities she has created for generations of artists and the contribution she has made to the wider Fringe community.
